I got this unit for two reasons; I have two cars and I prefer to have the radar detector mounted on the visor as opposed to the dash where it rattles around. This unit saves me the money of having to buy two radar detectors to cover both of my cars.
In the past I kept my radar detector in my sports car thinking that was the vehicle where I needed it the most. But my V-8 truck cruises along the highway so well I had 2 tickets before I purchased this cordless unit.
I was a little weary since some reviews say the battery life is not good but I do not experience this problem. I do frequent road trips of several hours and it lasts throughout for me and keeps me covered.
It works great right out of the box and saves me a fortune no matter which vehicle I am driving.

"A class of one. The Solo S2 is unquestionably the most sophisticated, high-performance cordless radar detector on the planet. For a cordless detector it's little short of an engineering miracle."
AutoWeek
"When all was said and done, one unit emerged as the staff's favorite."

If you ride a motorcycle this is one radar detector that you should consider buying. Of course the big plus to this model is there is no power cord! For a motorcycle rider this is a dream come true. I did read some reviews where consumers complained about the battery time, but I have not been disappointed. I personally feel that I get plenty of run time with the Solo S2 and am happy with the battery life.
The other feature that makes this great for use on a motorcycle is the earphone jack. This allowed me to use a earphone with the unit so that I could have an alert inside my helmet that I could hear loud and clear.
I ride a lot in the Rockies in the summer and this is a perfect setup for a rider who wants to enjoy his sport bike on curvy mountain roads.

I have owned and use a solo and 8500 for about 2 years now. I use the spec setting as it lets me know who is tracking me,CHP,local police, etc. It has worked great on the freeways out in the boonies. Not so hot in city.Lately I have passed motocycle cops aiming thier lazer right at me and I get no warning. This have happened repeatly. So the cops have a new lazer and this unit wont warn you. I am considering buying the new 9500xi. I want to make sure it will detect the new lazers, and pop up radar frist. The solo and 8500 are excellent but dated units. Even the 9500ix may not detect the new traffic enforcement speed tracking devices in use now.

Stage: I live in a city of approximately 100K and drive roughly 5 miles to work daily through commercially-populated areas. The daily on-time of my S2 is approximately 45 minutes. I take 1-3 200+ mile round-trip interstate trips once per month. The detector is on continuously at all times while driving. Have owned the S2 for > two years. Before that, owned an 8500 for two years. Before that, used Bells and Cobras.
Battery Life: 2 AAs last me approximately two months. That's 12 AAs per year, or in bulk, approximately $12/yr or $1/mo. Having used a corded 8500 for a couple of years (which I loved) and having power supply failures due to cord fatigue, not having to deal with a cord is worth it, BAR NONE.
Sensitivity: This device is, in my opinion, just as good as the corded Passport models. Scientific tests will refute that, but real-world usage will not. I was worried by an article that said "battery-operated detectors 'sleep' between cycles so are therefore less effective" but in real-world conditions, I do not think this is an issue: the 'sleep' time, if any, is a non-issue.
Controls: I have large hands and fingers. Even so, this device is crisp to use. Navigation of settings, should you decide to change the out-of-box defaults, is simple and straight-forward.
Overall: Nothing compares. No cords. Battery life to cost ratio for such is a non-issue. Real-world sensitivity beyond actual need. No questions asked, the best deal out there for a radar detector, period.

Basically the Escort S2 is the best cordless detector you can buy. I've owned the Escort S2 for a few weeks now and I must say I am quiet impressed. The unit gives LONG range warning so that it does what its designed to do, eliminate speeding tickets. The unit has tons of features overall and I am happy to say its well worth the money, you will not be sorry you purchased this product.

A friend said this is the right radar detector, and he was right. Drove from Chicago to Montana and back and was always informed of active radar sources along the way. Was surprised when it picked up roadside speed warning sign, but that should have been expected. Batteries still going after six full days of driving over 10 hours a day.

I have owned 2 escort solo S2's one for my Z06 and one for my truck. they have saved me at least 100 tickets. I do go through some batteries but the convience and ease of use more than makes up for that. I will never use a corded model. I have not gotten 1 ticket since I started using it. I average 80 to 90 mph and drive 30,000 miles a year. I have gotten signals from over a mile away plenty of time to slow down.
