Cordless Freedom

No other detector provides the portable convenience and protection of the SOLO S3. It's easy to own and operate. No more cords - just place it on the windshield or dashboard, turn it on, and you're ready to go. The SOLO S3 is ideal for the traveler who is constantly in and out of rental cars or just wants the easiest-to-use protection.

Programmable Features

SOLO S3 packs 9-user programmable features, allowing you to customize it for your specific driving style. Your preferred settings are stored in memory, even when you replace SOLO S3's batteries. Or, simply use SOLO S3's factory settings, allowing you to just turn it on and go.

High-Resolution Display

A new brilliant OLED display makes the SOLO S3 radar detector intuitive to use and easy to understand. Each radar, laser or SWS signal is identified and communicated to you with clear messages. Signal strength is provided using two types of meters (programmable) which include Standard Bar-graph and ExpertMeter.

Long-Range Radar Protection

The redesigned SOLO S3 provides long-range warning on all radar bands including conventional and "instant-on" X-band, K-band, and Superwide Ka-band. Patented Digital Signal Processing (DSP) provides the longest warning possible without constant false alarms.

Ultra-Performance Laser Protection

The SOLO S3 uses multiple low-noise laser sensors to provide long-range warning and the widest field of view against laser encounters.

High-efficiency Battery Design

SOLO S3 uses only a fraction of the power used by conventional corded detectors. Using 2 standard (AA) batteries (included), the SOLO S3 provides months of normal driving protection. A new low-battery warning circuit keeps constant watch on the condition of the batteries, and provides you with both audible and visual alerts before they need to be replaced. A new AutoPower feature (programmable) automatically turns the SOLO S3 off to conserve battery life.

I currently have the Solo S2 which was upgraded from the previous model. I bought the SOLO because I often drive different cars and rental cars and wanted to be able to easily take it with me and not have to worry about plugging in a cord. It's very stealth looking and is easy to program although I usually just keep it on Highway mode. It gives me plenty of warning for radar signals UNLESS I'm the only car on the highway and they are using a instant on type of radar OR laser. NO detector can help you in that situation. I know the corded detectors can provide better warnings but I still like the ease of portability and no cords to have to worry about. Battery life is very good and depending on how much I'm driving, it can last a month. I always keep 2 AA batteries in the case just in case.

The small intermittent led that shows power is on is disconcerting. I find myself staring at it to make sure it's still on and it doesnt flash as often as I would like. I have a 9500xi Passport with Escort live and absolutely love it. The solo s3 is good for what it is but needs an indicator that shows its on all the time. I would sacrifice battery life for that feature.

The things that absolutely drive me nuts is the false laser alarms. If the sun reflects off anything it goes off. I live in Colorado, lots of sun so it is a constant issue. I have never actually had a real laser alarm. Of course I expected less range than the passport but it is truly about 20% of what the passport does, a lot of times the cop has already got you when it detects.

Spend the extra money and get the passport and smart cord live. There are enough people on the network now that sometimes I will get notified about speed traps a mile before my detector even goes off. Get a solo for a motorcycle.

Outdated Filtering

Pros

  • Durable
  • Easy To Mount
  • Good Sensitivity
  • Versatile

Cons

  • Gives False Reads

Best Uses

  • Rural Driving

Comments about Escort SOLO S3:

I like the Solo, but it does not have the latest filtering capability, to filter out collision avoidance signals from other vehicles, etc. Nor is this unit upradable to upload new algorithms. K band is pretty much overwhelmed in city driving, or in close proxcimity to other vehicles, especially GM vehicles that seem to cause the most false K band alerts. I had to disable K in order to continue using Solo. K band isnt used very much by LE anyway. Less expensive than buying a new one that includes the newfilters and algos, and are upgradable.

Cons

  • Gives False Reads

Comments about Escort SOLO S3:

Does not work well with vehicles equipped with active cruise control, lane keeping or collision avoidance systems which unfortunately reduces it to an annoyance since all my vehicles are equipped with these systems.

I believe the market potential for an advanced battery operated detector would be a big one. I dislike corded systems and would prefer to give a little on accuracy to have the convenience of a cordless system. With that said this unit should be updated to include GPS or DSP.

Sadly, in the end the SOLO S3 was just too annoying for day to day use and I gave the unit to my son.

Good basic detector - WAY overdue for an upgrade/update

        Comments about Escort SOLO S3:

I've had the S3 for what seems well over 10 years (had it's predecessor model as well). Battery-operated detectors have their limitations, of course - power saving vs. range/"alert-ness". But having said that, the S3 hasn't let me down yet. Ease of installation, ability to use when traveling and no unsightly cords are pluses.

        BUT . .

This model is WAY overdue for an upgrade. Where's the S4, Escort? Improvements should be made in display style, color, and size; possible addition of a GPS chip; integration with Escort Live (which I don't use, by the way); and a slimmer case design (maybe magnesium instead of plastic).

C'mon Escort. You're way behind the curve on the cordless front. Time to reinvent the S3.

            Comments about Escort SOLO S3:

I use this going to/from work and on trips. It is the best choice for air travel and use in rental cars. At first I was concerned about the range sensitivity but it has always provided ample time to respond to alerts. The battery feature makes it easy to remove and conceal when not in use to prevent theft. Battery life is better than expected and of course depends on the time that the unit is actually on. I have a couple of devices that use AA batteries so I buy them in bulk so they are fairly cheap.

The Solo S-3 worked great in my 2013 GT Mustang, which I later traded in for an F150. I never received a ticket while using the Solo S-3 (sometimes I forgot to turn it on, oops my bad).

I went out to leave for work this morning and some Jack-Hole had stolen it out of the center console.

Since I had registered it with Escort, I called them to ensure I had the model# & S/N correct; Cust Service told me that with a copy of a police report & a purchase within 30 days I would get $80 discount on my next item I buy.

This company is the worst, I sent returned the product the next day and they still haven't refunded my money even though they said claim you have 30 days. Customer service then doesn't answer and they just avoid you. I used to have a cordless Beltronics years ago and worked perfect every time. With this one you can drive passed cops all day and only goes off for false alerts. Finally worked once and the officer clearly detected it, then followed me on my bumper all the way home. I'm in a state where Radar detectors are legal, but they still apparently don't like it at all.

                        Comments about Escort SOLO S3:

I am okay with the less than ample performance and range of the Redline and the old 8500.
The biggest problem to my mind is that it does not speak the language of the Redline and the 8500. The gradual alert ramp up beep rate relative to signal strength is very erratic or non existent. It more often than not just comes on with a sudden full alert in situations where the radar source was not instant-on.
I would be happy if I could select a battery eating 2x or 3x sampling rate to get smoother response and higher performance. That would mean I swap out my rechargeable NiMH batteries every few days rather than every few weeks. Small price to pay.

Hey Escort! Bring out a modern battery powered detector, and I would buy it in a heartbeat. This model is what, some more than ten years old?

Yes I would recommend this to a friend, but with the above caveats.

Let me start by saying I've been a long time fan of Escort.

This being said DO NOT BUY THIS RADAR DETECTOR. I owned an 8500x50 for 3 years and loved it. Car was recently broken into and my Escort stolen, so figured I would buy a cordless to replace.

The Solo is complete garbage. Terrible range (at times it goes off after I see the cop car) and the amount of false alerts while driving through towns is unbearable. I used the Solo for ~ a month and it's apparent it's worthless. I'm shopping for replacements - likely moving fwd with the ValentineOne.

                              Comments about Escort SOLO S3:

THE WORST RADAR DETECTOR / DO NOT BUY. And terrible customer service / replacement options.

Prior to purchasing I used the 8500 for ~ 3Yrs. Was a GREAT product. It was stolen recently so thought I would try out the cordless. It's beyond useless and frankly just an annoyance - range is terrible / worthless, false alarms happen constantly. It's picked up one Ka band and I saw the cop before the alert sounded...

Just got off the phone with customer service - assumed I would be able to exchange. The return policy is beyond laughable. I have only been using the detector for ~10 days, and only purchased ~ 20 days ago. The only option available is to return it and get an $80 credit towards another detector purchase.

Escort just lost a customer. I will be migrating to a Valentine One.
